Miguel Covarrubias imagined an encounter between Soviet leader Joseph Stalin and Italian-born Paris designer Elsa Schiaparelli, and the drawing's subject tags point to parachuting as the topic. The work was published in the *Impossible Interview* series, in which Covarrubias paired public figures in invented conversations rendered as caricature portraits. Painted in gouache and watercolor over a graphite underdrawing in 1936, the sheet shows how the artist used precise line and bright, flat color to mock two figures whose public personas were already widely known.
