In this photograph, the Mexican artist Miguel Covarrubias (1904-1957) is shown speaking with an elderly Balinese woman. The image dates from between 1930 and 1935, a period when Covarrubias and his wife, Rosa, were studying the island's art, dance, and daily life. Library staff devised the title, and the record notes that Rosa Covarrubias may have made the photograph. Covarrubias later drew on this work for his book *Island of Bali* (1937), which helped shape Western images of the island in the decades that followed.
