Two elderly passengers in their finest clothes have dozed off side by side on a subway car, their heads tipped together as the train rattles on. Perry Barlow drew this watercolor, charcoal, and graphite scene for the cover of *The New Yorker* on December 3, 1938. The magazine's covers of that era often found gentle humor in everyday city life, and here the contrast between evening-dress formality and plain weariness on a long ride makes the joke. The subway, then a nickel fare across the city, was a familiar setting for such scenes, and the picture rewards a close look at the posture and dress of its two sleepers.
