This Puck cover centers on a horse and the automobile driving that was beginning to replace it, as the title *The passing of the horse* signals. Published February 22, 1899, in the satirical weekly Puck, it was drawn by J.S. Pughe and printed as a color lithograph by J. Ottmann for Keppler & Schwarzmann. In the late 1890s the horseless carriage was still a novelty on American roads, and cartoons like this one played on anxieties about speed and a way of life tied to the animal. The cover records how quickly a familiar sight was being questioned.
