The word "Suprema" and the figure of an angel set this label apart, and the name suggests a cigar or tobacco brand trying to project quality. Schumacher & Ettlinger, the New York firm that printed it around 1871, was one of many lithographers in the city that supplied colorful labels for tobacco packages in the 1870s. Manufacturers used these pictures to make their goods stand out on crowded shop shelves, and sentimental or heavenly imagery was a common choice. The label is a useful record of how commercial art and mass printing shaped advertising in the decade after the Civil War.
