Few corners of Germany kept older dress as visibly as the Spreewald, a marshy network of channels southeast of Berlin where the Sorbs, a Slavic minority also known as Wends, have lived for centuries. This chromolithograph, printed by J.G. Bach in Leipzig, shows local women in their traditional clothing, built up from multiple color stones in the commercial style of the late nineteenth century. Prints like this sold well as souvenirs and as picturesque views of rural life, and they reflect a European appetite for images of regional costume, even though the traditions they recorded were already shaped by outside curiosity.
