Christopher Columbus's departure from the Spanish port of Palos is the scene here. In August 1492 he sailed from Palos de la Frontera with three ships, the Niña, the Pinta, and the Santa María, on the voyage that led to the Caribbean. This color lithograph was published in Paris by the widow Turgis, with its title printed in both French and Spanish, and its credit line also names Casse frères of Saint-Gaudens. Prints like this were popular in the later nineteenth century, when scenes of Columbus's sailing were often used to celebrate exploration and national ambition.
