The title calls this scene the ruins of Christopher Columbus's "castle" at Santo Domingo, though the building was really a residence, the Alcázar de Colón, that his son Diego began in the 1510s after returning to the island as governor. It was among the first large stone houses built by Europeans in the Americas and stood in the colonial city's center for generations. By the 1800s, when this etching was made, the structure had fallen into decline, and prints like this one fed a European and American fascination with Columbus and with the abandoned monuments of the early Spanish colonies.
