Issued in Paris as number 64 in a series on American seaports, this hand-colored lithograph offers a French view of San Francisco only about a decade after the 1849 gold rush transformed the town. Deroy both drew and lithographed the sheet, and its title appears in French and Spanish, which suggests the European audience it was made for. Such views were popular abroad, giving armchair readers a glimpse of a Pacific port that had grown from a small settlement in a few years. The crowded waterfront and hillside streets are worth a close look as a record of how quickly the city filled in.
