This etching, hand-colored and captioned in French and German, shows the Dutch island of St. Eustatius in the Caribbean, which the British took from the Dutch in February 1781. Its title and the subject headings point to warships and fortifications, so the view is less a portrait of the island than a record of the naval action. St. Eustatius had long been a busy free port, and its trade was a major channel for supplies reaching the American rebels, which made its capture a notable event of the American Revolution. The print was engraved by Bergmüller and issued in Augsburg, a center of German print publishing, during the 1780s.
