Few wartime posters from Germany made their appeal as directly as this 1917 lithograph, whose German title tells viewers to "subscribe to the war loan, the army and navy expect it of you." Printed in Berlin by Hollerbaum & Schmidt and credited to the Atelier Bernhard, it belongs to the wave of war bond campaigns that the German government used to finance the First World War. Bonds of this kind asked ordinary citizens to lend money to the state, and posters like this one tied that lending to duty toward soldiers at the front. The large 140 by 91 centimeter format was meant to catch the eye in streets and public buildings.
