Und eure Pflicht?" ("And your duty?") asks the viewer to answer for the war effort in a way that many war-loan appeals do not. Published in Berlin in 1918 by Hollerbaum & Schmidt and credited to an artist named Horrmeyer, this color lithograph urges readers to subscribe to the Kriegsanleihe, or war loan. Germany financed much of its fighting through a series of such loans between 1914 and 1918, and posters like this one were a major way of persuading ordinary citizens to lend their savings to the state. The catalog also links the poster to war casualties, a reminder of the human cost behind the appeal for money.
