Zeichnet die 8. Kriegsanleihe" is German for "Subscribe to the 8th War Loan," and the poster's message is in its wording. Germany paid for much of its war effort through a series of government war loans, which ordinary citizens bought as bonds through banks and public campaigns. By the eighth loan in 1918, the country was under growing financial strain, and posters like this one urged people to lend their savings to the state. The design relies on bold, stylized lettering rather than pictures, so the words do the persuading. It is a reminder that the war was fought on the home front as well as in the trenches.
