Few posters of the period tie political upheaval to hunger as plainly as this one, whose German title reads "Anarchie ist Helfer der Reaktion und Hungersnot," or "Anarchy Is the Helper of Reaction and Famine." Printed in Munich in 1918 by the Kunstanstalt O. Consée and dated December 1918 in its title, it appeared as Germany was emerging from defeat and the November revolution that ended the monarchy. The record also lists angels among its subjects, a reminder that poster makers often drew on religious imagery to make political arguments. At roughly 125 by 96 centimeters, it is a large color lithograph from the wartime and postwar poster trade.
