The headline "Au 69ème" and the opening of the appeal show this is a French-language recruiting poster for the 69th Battalion of the Canadian Expeditionary Force, aimed at men in Montreal. The printed promise to volunteers is cut off before the terms are stated, so the exact benefits are unclear. Printed in Montreal in 1915, the poster reflects a time when Canada depended on voluntary enlistment and recruiters in Quebec had to address French-speaking audiences directly, many of whom were wary of the war. It shows how wartime appeals were tailored by language and region.
