A French soldier stands in a trench at dawn, gazing past the parapet as the first sunlight falls across him, while the caption describes him dreaming of victory and home. Issued in 1917, the color lithograph urges viewers to subscribe to the third National Defense Loan, one of several war bond drives the French government ran to finance the fighting by borrowing from its own citizens. The poster is signed by Lieutenant Jean Droit, which lends it the air of an officer's view of the front. Its tender, almost pastoral mood was typical of home-front appeals that paired the hardships of the trenches with the hope of return.
