Subscribe, help us win: this 1916 lithograph asks French families to fund the war by buying bonds, promising that their money would hasten victory and the soldiers' return home. It is signed by Hansi, the pen name of Jean-Jacques Waltz, an Alsatian illustrator whose folk-style scenes of village life made him a leading graphic artist of the war. The Second National Defense Loan was one of several bond drives France used to finance the conflict, and posters like this one carried the appeal into villages far from the front. Its subjects of village life and military personnel show how the campaign linked the home front with the battlefield.
