Marianne, the national emblem of France, leads this 1918 lithograph urging readers to subscribe to the Emprunt de la Libération, the Liberation Loan, through the Banque française pour le commerce et l'industrie. The French government sold such war bonds to ordinary citizens to finance the final year of fighting, and posters like this one tied buying a bond to patriotic duty. Signed by the illustrator William Malherbe, the design shows the Marianne figure alongside French soldiers, which is why the poster is often studied as an example of how wartime finance was sold to the public.
