Few wartime French posters name a regional bank as plainly as this one, which pairs the Société Marseillaise de Crédit with a call to subscribe to the Emprunt de la Libération, or Liberation Loan, of 1918. Such government loans helped finance the war effort and the recovery of territory held by Germany. The poster is signed by Jacques Carlu, a designer who later became better known as an architect, and it appears as item 11 in a printed checklist, which suggests how these loan posters were gathered and catalogued as a group. Its soldier subject reflects the patriotic appeal that ran through financial campaigns of the period.
