Its slogan, "So that right may prevail," frames the appeal to buy bonds as a moral cause, and the figure of Marianne, the national emblem of France, personifies that cause. The poster was made in 1918 by William Malherbe for the Société Générale, a major French bank that helped sell the government's war loans. The Emprunts de la Défense Nationale raised money from ordinary citizens to finance the war effort, and this fourth loan came in the final months of the First World War. The poster's catalog record also notes German military personnel among its subjects, a reminder of the enemy the bond drives were meant to defeat.
