Few posters of the war combine a soldier's private longing with a plea for money as directly as this one. Lithographed in color in 1917, it shows a French infantryman in a trench as the first light of dawn reaches him, and its French title says he dreams of victory and of home. The sheet is signed by Lieut. Jean Droit, and it was made to promote the Third National Defense Loan, one of several bond drives the French government ran to pay for the war. Posters like this one asked civilians on the home front to see their savings as a way of supporting the men in the trenches.
