A French call to buy government war bonds, the poster's title reads "Souscrivez à l'Emprunt d..." and is cut short in the record, so the full name of the loan is unclear. Dated 1918, the final year of the war, it belongs to a period when France paid for much of its fighting through public borrowing. The state issued a series of these loans and promoted them with posters, newspaper notices and public events. Posters like this one asked ordinary citizens to lend their savings to the nation and presented the purchase as a patriotic duty, which the imperative "Souscrivez," meaning "subscribe," makes plain.
