The title, "Attendrons-nous que les nôtres brûlent? Enrôlons-nous et tout de suite," translates roughly as "Shall we wait until our own are burning? Enlist now," and it sets the poster's appeal directly. By 1915, the war had settled into trench stalemate on the Western Front, and German advances had destroyed towns and villages in northern France and Belgium. Recruitment posters of this kind used that fear of invasion to push men toward immediate enlistment. The message ties the call to arms to the defense of home and family rather than to distant battles.
