Few wartime posters state the bargain so bluntly: this 1914 French color lithograph tells civilians to "deposit your gold" while the fighting men "willingly give our blood." Measuring 37 by 27 centimeters, it belongs to the 1914-15 drive that asked French families to turn over gold coin to help fund the war. Its cheerful "Ohé!" greeting and its pairing of coins with soldiers' sacrifice were meant to make giving money feel as patriotic as enlisting. The poster shows how the home front's financial contribution became a central theme of French war propaganda.
