The poster's slogan, "On les aura!" ("We will get them!"), turns a soldier's defiant words into a call to buy state bonds. Its wording, "Souscrivez" ("Subscribe"), asks ordinary French citizens to lend money to the government, which paid for the war through such loans as well as taxes. Posters like this filled French streets during the First World War, when the state needed money on a scale no earlier conflict had demanded. Its pairing of a fighting message with a financial request shows how the war effort reached into civilian life, asking families at home to contribute as well as those at the front.
