The Emprunt de la Défense Nationale was a French war bond campaign, and this poster from 1915 uses a soldier to ask ordinary citizens to lend money to the state. France financed much of its First World War effort through such loans, which were marketed to the public as a patriotic duty as well as an investment. Posters like this one were pasted on walls and kiosks across the country, with the soldier serving as a figure of sacrifice that urged civilians on the home front to match the fighting men's commitment with their savings.
