Few war posters carry the name of a London bank, which makes this one unusual: it promoted a French government loan through the London County Westminster Bank, aimed at investors on both sides of the Channel. The Emprunt de la Libération, or Liberation Loan, was floated in France in 1918 to help fund the recovery of northern provinces that German forces had occupied and damaged during the war. Like other Allied bond drives, it relied on patriotic appeals asking ordinary savers to lend their money to the national cause, and posters such as this were a main way those appeals reached the public.
