The French title, *Emprunt de la Libération*, names a Liberation Loan, a government bond drive that the French state promoted in 1918 to help finance the last months of the war. The command *Souscrivez!* ("Subscribe!") is the poster's direct appeal, the kind of plain instruction printers used to turn patriotic feeling into purchases by ordinary households. Such loans were sold through banks, post offices and local agents, and posters like this were pasted on walls and in public places across French cities and towns. What stands out is how the campaign presented lending money to the state as a civic duty tied to victory, a message that carried into the armistice of November 1918.
