Printed in 1915, this French call to subscribe belongs to the Emprunt de la Défense Nationale, a series of government war bonds that asked ordinary citizens to lend money to the state. France financed much of its war through such loans, and posters like this one presented buying a bond as a patriotic duty comparable to serving at the front. Appeals of this kind were displayed in banks, post offices and public squares, and they show how the home front was mobilized alongside the army.
