Few French war loan posters from 1918 pair a Liberty figure with soldiers as directly as this one, and its single word, "Souscrivez" (subscribe), makes the appeal plain. The Emprunt de la Libération was one of the government's wartime bond drives, and posters like this one were pasted on walls, station platforms and town squares to bring in small investors as well as banks. Such images relied on allegory and patriotic symbolism because the state needed ordinary citizens to lend money to the war effort. The poster ties buying a bond to the cause of liberation itself, presenting a financial act as a civic duty.
