The title, roughly "We'll get them," is a French battle cry from 1916, the year the German assault on Verdun dragged on for months and became a symbol of French endurance. Slogans like this were printed on posters, postcards and illustrations that carried morale-building messages to a home front living with long casualty lists. Read in that light, the picture seems less a record of combat than an effort to turn grief and fatigue into resolve. Its wording is worth noticing, since it addresses the nation as a collective "we" rather than any single soldier.
