Few wartime posters name their cause as plainly as this 1917 French color lithograph, whose title announces its subject: soldiers "stricken with tuberculosis" and the Central Committee formed to assist them. Signed simply "Roll," the large sheet, about one meter by 1.4 meters, belongs to a class of posters typically displayed in public places to win support for charitable work. Tuberculosis was a serious problem in the French army during the First World War, as crowded billets, damp trenches and poor rations weakened men, and many were sent home or to sanatoria rather than back to the front. The listed subjects, including nurses, point to the care effort the image was meant to promote.
