Issued in 1917 for France's national tuberculosis day, this color lithograph honors veterans of the front and is signed by the artist Lévy-Dhurmer. Tuberculosis spread widely during the First World War, when crowded quarters, poor rations and exposure weakened soldiers and civilians alike, and the campaign paid particular attention to men returning from service. Another issue of the design was printed in reverse, with the soldier on the left, so copies can be compared to tell the versions apart.
