Few wartime posters tie charity so directly to the stage as this one does, advertising a gala matinee at the Théâtre Sarah Bernhardt in Paris for the benefit of the National Association of Disabled Servicemen. The sepia lithograph on yellow stock is signed by G. Clairin, a painter who was a friend of the actress Sarah Bernhardt, and it dates to 1917, when France was counting the cost of nearly three years of trench warfare. Theatrical benefits like this were a common way to raise money for veterans with lasting injuries, and the poster's subject headings, military personnel and casualties, point to the men it was meant to help.
