The French title, *Le gala des marins de F*, announces an evening entertainment for sailors, though the record cuts off the place name, so the port or town it honors is unclear. The picture dates to 1916, when France was in the third year of the First World War. Across the country, civilian committees organized concerts, dinners, and benefit galas for servicemen, partly to raise money for relief and partly to lift morale among men far from home. Images like this one show how such events brought uniformed sailors together with local families and volunteers in a brief pause from the war.
