Few posters from the First World War pair a relief appeal with a police theme, and this color lithograph by Maurice Romberg does both. Signed and dated 1916, it was printed in the middle of the war, when French civilian charities were raising money for families and others hurt by the fighting. The subject headings for the work also list police, a reminder that the home front was policed and organized as well as fed and funded. The poster's large format, 125 by 90 centimeters, suggests it was meant to be seen from a distance on city streets.
