The Aisne, a department in northern France, is the place this poster is about, and the title names it directly: "L'Aisne dévastée," or "Devastated Aisne." Théophile-Alexandre Steinlen signed the 1919 lithograph, which was printed in two colors and issued as a war fund appeal for rebuilding homes destroyed in the fighting. The Aisne lay along the front for much of the war and was heavily damaged, so the subject of mothers and children set against ruin would have been immediately clear to French viewers of the time. Steinlen was known for sympathetic images of ordinary people, and here that sensibility serves a fundraising purpose.
