Adolphe Willette's 1916 color lithograph advertises the Giron Days of June 1 through 4, 1916, a fundraiser whose proceeds went entirely to the department's war charities. Its subjects, Marianne, the figure of the French republic, along with soldiers, industrial labor, and casualties, show how civilian relief and the war effort were presented together to the public. Willette was a Montmartre illustrator best known for his melancholy Pierrot and for his caricatures, so his hand is worth noticing in a work meant to rally donations during a long and costly war.
