Few posters from the war tie a single date so closely to a national memory as this one, which marks June 25, 1916, as Serbia Day and the anniversary of the Battle of Kosovo. That battle, fought in 1389, is central to Serbian identity, and invoking it in 1916 linked a wartime appeal to a long history of resistance. The poster is signed by the French artist Charles Fouqueray and was made after Serbia's army had withdrawn through Albania following the 1915 invasion. Its appeal rests on support for a small nation that had suffered a severe defeat.
