Few posters of the war tie a single region so directly to the soldier's pack. Its title names the Puy-de-Dôme, a department in the Auvergne region of central France, and sets a day of collection for the soldier's kit on January 23, 1916. The lithograph is signed by Adolphe Willette, a Paris illustrator known for sentimental and satirical work, and its subjects include mothers and children, a reminder that families at home were expected to equip the men at the front. Posters like this were used across France to raise money and goods for the troops, which makes this local day of giving a useful window onto home-front fundraising.
