Paris's street children take center stage in this 1916 color lithograph, signed by Poulbot and issued for a July 14 charity day benefiting war works run through the Hôtel de Ville. Francisque Poulbot was known for his drawings of the scruffy, spirited urchins of Montmartre and other working-class quarters, and that affectionate style gives the sheet its emotional pull. Bastille Day, France's national holiday, was a fitting occasion for civic fundraising during the war. The subjects cataloged for the print, which include soldiers, casualties and children, show how the appeal linked everyday Parisians to the front.
