Poulbot's color lithograph promotes the Journée de la Vendéenne, a day of public appeals held on March 5, 1916, in support of France's war effort. Francisque Poulbot was a Montmartre illustrator best known for his scruffy, sympathetic drawings of Parisian street children, and that eye carries over here, where children walk alongside soldiers and the war's casualties are part of the subject. Printed during the Great War, the poster shows how civilian life, especially the young, was drawn into national morale campaigns.
