Journée de l'orphelinat des armées, or War Orphanage Day, names a fundraising appeal for the children of French soldiers killed in the First World War. This two-color lithograph is signed only with the initial "R.," so the artist is not identified in its record. By 1915, as the number of fatherless children grew, French charities and government bodies relied on campaigns like this one, and posters were a main way to ask the public for donations. The catalog places the work under the economic and industrial side of the war, a reminder that the home front was organized around raising money as much as around production.
