Signed by the painter and illustrator Charles Fouqueray and dated 1917, this large color lithograph promotes a French day honoring the Army of Africa and the colonial troops who served with it. France drew heavily on its colonies for manpower during the First World War, and tirailleurs and other soldiers from North and West Africa fought on the Western Front and in other theaters. Posters like this one presented that service as loyalty to the nation, aimed at audiences at home and meant to rally public support for the soldiers.
