This 1917 color lithograph, signed by the French artist Charles Fouqueray, carries a title that translates as "A Day for the African Army and the Colonial Troops." It belongs to the French wartime practice of designating special "days" to rally public support and raise money for soldiers and their families. By 1917, African and other colonial soldiers made up a significant part of France's fighting force, serving on the Western Front and in other theaters. The poster is a useful record of how the French home front was encouraged to recognize these troops, and it is one of a series of posters from the period that used bold graphic design to promote the war effort.
