Taken from the hill of Montjuïc, which overlooks the port, this albumen print surveys Barcelona's harbor and the city spread beyond it. The photographer, J. Laurent, was a prominent maker of Spanish views in the later nineteenth century, and his pictures were widely sold in albums like the one this print came from, listed here on page 61 of a Spain volume. Albumen prints of this period were made by coating paper with egg white and light-sensitive silver salts, which gave them a warm tone and fine detail well suited to landscapes. Barcelona's port was a busy center of trade in these decades, so the view records a working waterfront as much as a scenic city.
