A twin-arched window, or ajimez, in the Hall of the Ambassadors in the Alhambra is the subject here, a detail of the Nasrid palace that the Moorish builders of Granada shaped for light and view. The print was made by J. Laurent, a photographer working in Madrid, whose studio produced many views of Spanish monuments for travelers and collectors in the decades after mid-century. Albumen prints like this one, made on paper coated with egg white, were the standard method of the period, and their soft tones suit the fine stonework and carved plaster of the palace.
