Few buildings on the Acropolis are as recognizable as the Erechtheum, the Ionic temple shown in this view by D. Constantin. Built between about 421 and 406 B.C., it honored Athena and the legendary king Erechtheus, and its south porch, supported by six draped female figures called caryatids, has become one of the most copied motifs in classical architecture. This print was mounted in a traveler's album that also held views of Egypt, the Rhine, Switzerland, and the Tyrol, which shows how central Athens' ruins had become to European travel by the 1860s and 1870s.
