The picture shows the tomb of Sultan Barkouk, the Mamluk ruler whose mausoleum stands in the great cemetery north of Cairo, often called the City of the Dead. Its domed chamber and carved stone facade reflect the Mamluk building style of the late 1300s, when sultans commissioned elaborate tombs that doubled as places of prayer. The print is an albumen photograph by P. Sebah, a studio photographer known for views of the Ottoman Empire and Egypt, and it was sold to travelers in the late 1800s. Its place in a tourist album alongside views of Athens and the Rhine shows how visitors collected the monuments of the Near East as they would European sights.
