The record places this view at the Mosque of Sultan Darkhour in Cairo, one of the many Islamic monuments that photographers documented in Egypt during the later nineteenth century. Its catalog entry notes that it was issued as no. 141 in an album that also covered Jerusalem, Alexandria, and Rome, which suggests it was sold to travelers and collectors touring the Mediterranean and the Near East. Albumen prints like this one were made from glass negatives and were the standard way to bring images of distant sites home. Cairo's mosques, many dating to the Mamluk period, drew particular interest from Western viewers for their stonework and architecture.
